چکیده

We present a search for HCN emission from four high redshift far infrared (IR) luminous galaxies. Current data and models suggest that these high z IR luminous galaxies represent a major starburst phase in the formation of spheroidal galaxies, although many of the sources also host luminous active galactic nuclei (AGN), such that a contribution to the dust heating by the AGN cannot be precluded. HCN emission is a star formation indicator, tracing dense molecular hydrogen gas within star-forming molecular clouds (n(H2) ∼ 10 cm). HCN luminosity is linearly correlated with IR luminosity for low redshift galaxies, unlike CO emission which can also trace gas at much lower density. We report a marginal detection of HCN (1-0) emission from the z = 2.5832 QSO J1409+5628, with a velocity integrated line luminosity of L′HCN = 6.7±2.2×10 K km s pc,

Is HCN a True Tracer of Dense Molecular Gas in LIRGs and ULIRGs?

We present the results of the first HCO survey probing the dense molecular gas content of a sample of 16 luminous and ultraluminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs and ULIRGs). Previous work, based on HCN(1–0) observations, had shown that LIRGs and ULIRGs posses a significantly higher fraction of dense molecular gas compared to normal galaxies. While the picture issued from HCO partly confirms this re...

Dust and molecular gas in high redshift radio galaxies

This review discusses the current status of our knowledge of emission by dust and molecular gas in high redshift radio galaxies, and the uncertainties in the derivation of physical parameters from these data. The similarity of far-infrared luminous, gas-rich high redshift radio galaxies and local ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIGs) is discussed. Given that local ULIGs rapidly convert most o...

Evidence of enhanced star formation efficiency in luminous and ultraluminous infrared galaxies

We present new observations made with the IRAM 30 m telescope of the J = 1−0 and 3–2 lines of HCN and HCO used to probe the dense molecular gas content in a sample of 17 local luminous and ultraluminous infrared galaxies (LIRGs and ULIRGs). These observations have allowed us to derive an updated version of the power law describing the correlation between the FIR luminosity (LFIR) and the HCN(1−...

Probing the Interstellar Medium of Z ∼ 1 Ultra-luminous Infrared Galaxies through Interferometric Observations of Co and Spitzer Mid-infrared Spectroscopy

We explore the relationship between gas, dust and star formation in a sample of 12 ultra-luminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) at high redshift compared to a similar sample of local galaxies. We present new CO observations and/or Spitzer mid-IR spectroscopy for 6 70μm-selected galaxies at z ∼ 1 in order to quantify the properties of the molecular gas reservoir, the contribution of an active galac...

Observations of Dense Molecular Gas in a Quasar Host Galaxy at Z=6.42: Further Evidence for a Non-linear Dense Gas – Star Formation Relation at Early Cosmic Times

We report a sensitive search for the HCN(J=2→1) emission line towards SDSS J114816.64+525150.3 (hereafter: J1148+5251) at z=6.42 with the Very Large Array (VLA). HCN emission is a star formation indicator, tracing dense molecular hydrogen gas (n(H2) ≥ 10 4 cm) within star-forming molecular clouds. No emission was detected in the deep interferometer maps of J1148+5251. We derive a limit for the ...
